Being a Parent of an Autistic Child
Having a child with autism is different, but it’s never a bad thing. But, of course, not everyone understands autistic children and what they experience, so parents can expect less compassionate people to stare at them while their autistic child is in the middle of a tantrum or exhibiting other behavioral issues in front of others.
When you’re the parent of an autistic child, it quickly turns into a full-time job that you deal with day in and day out, with some days being easier to manage than others. It requires a lot of energy to handle a child with autism who doesn’t think or react as neurotypical children would. Most parents take these simple tasks for granted, such as going to the store to grab a few items, grabbing some coffee, getting dressed for work, or even sitting down at the dinner table and eating as a family. However, these tasks are more challenging for parents of autistic children. It’s not uncommon for these parents to feel like everything is a battle, from picking out the right food to eat for a meal to going shopping or getting anything done. Unfortunately, those things that parents of neurotypical children find simple and easy enough to get done aren’t so simple or easy for parents of kids with autism.
